Larry has been a Professional Personal Trainer for over thirty years. He graduated from California State University Northridge in 1996 with a B.S.B.A., in Business Administration and Accounting. He has his personal training certification with PROPTA, also known as the Personal Trainers Association, where he currently holds the title of Master Professional Trainer. Larry began weight training at the age of 13 years old under the tutelage of Mr. Universe Mike Sable, and the late great Mike Mentzer. He began competing and won his first bodybuilding competition at the age of Sixteen. Having competed in many bodybuilding competitions, in 1985 he won the Teen USA Bodybuilding Championship, both light heavy weight and overall titles. After a 10 year hiatus from bodybuilding competition Larry returned to the stage in 1995 placing 5th in the NPC Excalibur Bodybuilding Championships. In 2003 he competed successfully (top two) in four NPC National Qualifiers and placed in the top ten at the NPC National Body Building Championships. As recently as 2005 Larry Competed in the NPC USA and North American Bodybuilding Championships and Won the AAU Mr. Venice Beach Competition. In 2007 He placed top 5 in the NPC Excalibur, Masters (over 40) Category. This was achieved after a prolonged illness, hospitalization and surgery. Ask him about it, he’ll tell you the whole story. In 2013 Larry competed in the Mr. California Bodybuilding, Mr. Venice Beach, & Masters Nationals winning two out of four competitions. In 2020 He competed and won the NPC Excalibur Bodybuilding Champoinship Masters (over 40) Category.
Larry began his competitive powerlifting career at the age of 20 winning his first ever competition with a 1,602 lbs total. For the next several years he won every competition he entered. In 2005 Larry began training with legendary Bench Press World Record Holder, Scot Mendelson. In 2009 he took up competing in powerlifting, winning the California State Powerlifting Championships, 242lbs division in both the Open and Masters (over 40) categories. He also took the Overall Best Lifter title. In 2010 at a bodyweight of 242lbs, he has performed an 820 lbs Squat, 555 lbs Bench Press, and 635lbs Deadlift for a 2,010 lbs total. Having competed in numerous competitions throughout his career and trained hundreds of competitors for both bodybuilding and powerlifting competitions, including several world champions. Larry has become a master at all aspects of the art and science contest preparation training, nutrition, and supplementation.
Aside from being a very experienced trainer in the usual areas of weight loss, body shaping and athletic training, Larry also specializes in the area of training older individuals, having worked with clients even in their 80’s. He has extensive training and has done his own research in the special training and nutrition needs of older adults. He has also begun working with clients who have suffered with illnesses such as diabetes or who have struggle with neuro-muscular diseases, using specialized neuro-muscular re-education techniques. Having suffered and come back from several severe injuries during his competitive career he has become a master at physical rehabilitation. His education and knowledge is unsurpassed. At Underground Performance Gym we use a scientific approach to training and nutrition. Every program is customized to the individual based on their individual structures and goals to ensure maximum optimization of the program and real results. We start with body composition testing to determine lean body mass, body fat percentage, RMR & BMR. From there we create customized nutrition programs tailored to the individual’s goals and lifestyle. Training is designed to maximize performance using proper biomechanical form, training loads, and volumes. Many factors are considered when preparing a program including experience in the gym, level of fitness, and identifying individual structural biomechanics and limitations.
